Dave Spivey, President, St. Mary Mercy Hospital, Trinity Health

Twenty years ago, as the Chief Executive Officer of a Detroit hospital, [tag]Dave Spivey found his hospital struggling financially due to a shifting healthcare reimbursement system. Facing adversity, Dave and other stakeholders in his community joined forces to transform the vacant hospital into a social services ambulatory mall offering acute medical care and a range of inpatient and outpatient services. In healthcare philanthropy, moving resources away from a health system and into the community that surrounds it can be challenging. Erin faced this head on as she set out to transform the [tag]Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s aspiration to address health equity in Philadelphia. In order to strengthen the hospital’s relationship with the community, Erin and her team had to start by re-examining how it integrated itself in meaningful, tangible ways.
